Fused Aluminas, our trade name Alumac

The trade name picks up on the name as you can ascertain, but this product family encompasses a broad range of products and materials specifications.

The manufacturing process for Fused Alumina takes the following key steps, firstly the base materials are mined, typically from >65% purity Bauxite. These in turn are semi processed by way of drying, grading and sometimes a calcining process. This semi processed raw  Bauxite is then subjected to a a reduction process under extreme temperatures. This is done by using Silica, Iron and Coke and typically conducted in an arc furnace or similar method, where the heating of the materials causes a fusion to take place and an alteration of the chemical and physical make up of the product. This fusion process yields a number of products from a ferro rich silicon materials through to lower medium and high purity Brown Fused Aluminas. A similar process is undertaken to produce Zirconia Aluminas.

White and Pink Fused Aluminas are made in a similar fashion to Brown, save a for a difference in the pre fusion materials. Here a Bayer treated or Calcined Alumina is used. This is a bauxite or natural ore materials that has been exposed to a chemical precipitation process or similar. This Calcined Alumina is then exposed to high temperatures well in excess of 2,100 degrees C in a furnace to alter the physical structure of the atoms. The addition of Chrome to the melt at this stage alters the structure and colour from a White to a Pink Fused Alumina.

Alumac Brown, this is our commercial brown alumina with Al2O3 content typically greater than 94%; used for commercial surface preparation, bonded & coated abrasives, slip resistant paint & coatings, vibratory mass finishing media manufacture to name a few applications.

Alumac Premium Brown, our aerospace certified brown fused alumina. Higher purity than the commercial grade with certified compliance to specifications such as Airbus ABR9-0160, Rolls Royce CSS12, GE DT50F, Rolls Royce OMAT184; 1/293; 145; 1/244; 146; 1/266ABR9-0160.

Alumac White, a commercial white alumina for no aerospace applications typically >99.6% Al2O3.

Alumac Premium White, an aerospace approved and certified white fused alumina to Rolls Royce CSS12 ; OMAT specifications, ABR9-0160 and GE DT50F specification.

Alumac Refractory, a brown fused alumina >94% Al2O3 and graded to standard metric fractions

Alumac Refractory White, as brown above but WFA and Al2O3 >99%.

Alumac Pink, a premium pink fused alumina in FEPA gradings F12 to F1200

Alumac Zirconia, a zirconia rich fused alumina matrix in either a 25% Zirconia or a 40% Zirconia content. Available to order in FEPA fractions.

Alumac Ferro a ferro laden fused alumina tapped from the base of the melt with >80% Al2O3 content.
